"The leaders who work most effectively, it seems to me, never say 'I'. And that's not because they have trained themselves not to say 'I'. They don't think 'I.' They think 'we'; they think 'team'. They understand their job to be to make the team function. They accept responsibility and don't sidestep it, but 'we' gets the credit.... This is what creates trust, what enables you to get the task done."
- Peter Drucker

"In organizations, real power and energy is generated through relationships. The patterns of relationships and the capacities to form them are more important than tasks, functions, roles, and positions."
- Margaret Wheatly Leadership and the New Science

"In our way of working, we attach a great deal of importance to humility and honesty; With respect for human values, we promise to serve our customers with integrity."
- Azim Premji

"To be able under all circumstances to practice five things constitutes perfect virtue; these five things are gravity, generosity of soul, sincerity, earnestness, and kindness."
- Confucius

RECOMMENDED READING

I was never an avid reader growing up, in college and especially as an adult. In March of 2004, I was about to board a plane in Boston for a business trip to Arizona. I stopped in the airport bookstore to grab my usual Sports Illustrated, People or 101 Ways to Play Practical Jokes on Friends and Loved Ones. I was about to walk to the register with the latter until the 2nd book on the list below caught my eye. I was working at Putnam Investments at the time and we were embodied in the heart of the market timing issues that were plaguing the mutual fund industry. Assets and people were flowing out quickly and morale was at an all-time low. Since then, starting with that Lou's book, I have read more and more books which have had a tremendous impact on my life. Here is a list of some of my favorites and I hope you enjoy as much I did.

BOOKS (some information quoted from on-line reviews):

If You Can Dream It You Can Do It Dr. Robert H. Schuller

I dedicate this book to a former colleague and friend named Julie Michaud who was taken from us far too early in 2006. Julie was/is a poster child for Enliven First as she "got it". Right before an April 2007 trip to Disney, I found this book on my nightstand with a note from Julie. She had sent me this when I was sick in 2002 and I do not recall ever seeing it or the note prior. It is a quick read but one of the most powerful books you will remember for the rest of your life. Thank you Julie.

Who Says Elephants Can't DanceLouis V. Gerstner

Gerstner is generally credited with having saved IBM from going out of business by inspiring employees to create a great company culture. His decision to keep the company together was the defining decision of his tenure.

Encouraging The Heart James M. Kouzes & Barry Z. Posner

"A Leader's Guide To Rewarding and Recognizing Others" is the subheading to this book.  A fantastic read for anyone that leads people at any level and in any environment.

Love Em or Lose Em – Beverly L Kaye & Sharon Jordan-Evans

"Getting Good People To Stay" is this book's subheading.  26 coupons (chapters) managers can give to employees to implement specific A to Z strategies.

The Tipping PointMalcolm Gladwell

"How Little Things Can Make a Big Difference"is the premise to this book that covers a wide variety of topics from business to children to epidemics of all proportions. Although you probably know it, this book reminds us how most things in life fall into the 80/20 Rule but further focuses on how events reach "tipping points" and results occur.

tuesdays With Morrie Mitch Albom

"an old man, a young man, and life's greatest lesson".  A true story that talks about the relationship between a pupil and his teacher and one final "class": lessons in how to live.

Lance ArmstrongLance Armstrong & Sally Jenkins

"It’s Not About The Bike, My Journey Back To Life" shows us that cancer does not discriminate and Lance is one of the millions of survivors who shares the life changing impact of this disease, not only on the patient, but on his/her loved ones.

Profiles in Courage – John F. Kennedy

"I think I was supposed to read this in high school and never did.  If you are involved in politics or any elected or volunteer leadership position, read the whole thing but if you are not, just read the foreword by Robert Kennedy as he articulates perfectly what courage means whether you are a CEO, teacher, parent or anyone in a leadership role."

RECOMMENDED VIEWING

Dead Poets Society – if you are on my website, you cannot be surprised by this.

White Squall – Dead Poets Society on the ocean.

Brian's Song – My all-time favorite movie since 6th grade.  Did a book report on it then and required every girlfriend I had since high school to watch it with me including Tracy. Who knew?

The American President – I would vote for Michael Douglas' character in a minute.

BIG – Tom Hanks teaches us many lessons and gives us some great laughs.

Jerry Maguire – a bit corny but we all remember and still yell "Show Me the Money" (at least I do). Plus deny it all you want, we all have a little Jerry in us with that epiphany moment and company vision.  I know when I had mine…

It's a Wonderful Life – watched it for first time in its entirety in December 2006, then kicked myself for waiting so long. Traditions have to start somewhere and it is a great message about how we should live.

Pay It Forward – Spectacular and easy yet many do not take the time to try it. I have been blessed and helped by so many so I constantly try to do my part too.
